Though there is no guarantee that the amount you would get by selling your broken gadget would be enough to soften the cost of your new device it definitely will do some help.

Time Taking: If you are a busy person whose work depends totally on the gadget that has gone faulted then, you should consider time as a crucial element as well. Look for the time a shopkeeper will take to repair your gadget and compare it with the time you will have to spend in ordering, receiving and then installing and customizing the device according to yourself. Comparing both times will let you decide the suitable solution more efficiently.

Consider Refurbs: When you go for replacement of a device to a company, they sometimes offer you to get refurbished device in exchange for the faulty one. Before you decide to have that do consider the policies as some companies forbid you the right to future repairs and customer service. Refurbs are great at times when you want to have a new device as they are low on budget and good in tech but might not come with full warranty.
